Back of the card

Ask for the back of the NIDA card or driving licence, and use what both sides say together.

By default digid reads only the front. Ask for the back when you want the barcode data, the licence's category table, or a check that both sides agree.

Asking for the back

Where Setting
Drop-in flow flow.require_back: "off" (default), "optional" (the user may skip it) or "required"
Engine session require_back: true in the flow (Flow.CardOnly(requireBack = true), .cardOnly(requireBack: true))

After the front is read, the step becomes scan_back and the guidance flip_to_back. The same guidance appears if the person shows the back first, or still shows the front on the back step.

If the back is not read within the step timeout (engine.step_timeout_s, 30 seconds by default), the flow carries on with the front alone. With "required" the drop-in flow offers no skip button, but the timeout still applies.

What the back adds

The document gets a document.back block:

Field Card Meaning
barcodes Both Every barcode decoded on the back: format and text, as read
nin NIDA The NIN, when the back carries one
licence_number Licence The licence number from the back
categories Licence The category table: code, issue_date, expiry_date and restrictions per row
restrictions Licence Restriction codes printed on their own

Two more checks

  • sides_match compares what both sides carry: the NIN, the licence number, and the licence's categories against its table.
    • Printed values that differ: fail.
    • A barcode that differs from the printed front: the barcode's value is used, and the check is warn.
    • Categories that differ from the table: warn.
  • back_read appears whenever the back was asked for. It is warn when the back was skipped or timed out.

A warn sends the verdict to review; a fail fails it. See Check codes.

Good to know

  • Back reading has not yet been tested on real backs of either card. Treat document.back as extra evidence, not as the basis of a decision, and keep a person in the loop for review results.
  • The front alone is enough for a complete NIDA result: the NIN, names, sex, date of birth (from the NIN) and card type are all on the front.
